Derek Andrews is a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers [past Federal President]; a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management; and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Appointed May 1991 Derek was Chief Executive Officer, Ports Corporation of Queensland until he retired on 31 July 2001. He was in charge during a period of major cultural and structural change as the organisation successfully moved to providing community and bulk port services and infrastructure on a commercial basis. The Ports Corporation was a multi-location port authority controlling seven trading ports and two community ports in the north of Queensland. Collectively the ports now handle over 100 million tonnes of bulk cargo per annum, worth over $7.0 billion AUD in annual exports. The Corporation was a significant developer of transport infrastructure investing almost $600 million in port-related projects in the last five years of Derek's tenure, achieving project goals in functionality and cost, on schedule.
He has since been involved in other businesses ventures. Consulting assignments include advising on transport infrastructure development and project management strategies for bulk transport logistic systems.
In his current part time employment as Business Development Manager he is involved in developing corporate strategies for growth, improving management capabilities and organizational outcomes of operating businesses.
In 2009 Derek was appointed Chairman of the Board of a company that develops mine blast and ballistic protection for security and military vehicles.
Derek has worked with [and on] Boards for more than 20 years and has been involved in establishing corporate structures; dismantling and changing structures; corporate and cultural renewal and business turnarounds.
Derek's professional experience of more than 40 years includes working as an industrial engineer [10years]; managing staff departments [3 years]; managing maintenance and production operations [6 years]; general manager roles [12 years]; as consultant to manufacturing and distribution businesses [3 years] and as Chief Executive Officer [16 years] responsible for company operations, growth and profit.
Industry experience includes: engineering factories; automotive [truck] assembly; tire and general rubber products manufacture; continuous process ore refinery including managing bulk material logistics, rail unloading and port terminal operations; timber milling, processing and marketing; manufacturing, importing and distribution of furniture components, machinery and consumer hardware; importing, manufacturing and distribution of construction equipment; mining, chemical processing and marketing of lime products; and port operations including developing major port infrastructure.
Time spent in Sweden, Germany, USA, New Zealand, Canada, Finland, and Switzerland was valuable in understanding management, manufacturing and distribution in global markets.
Derek works with entities interested in improving enterprise productivity and has a continuing interest in understanding and developing effective strategies to create wealth.
Derek contributes to the Australian Institute of Management Graduate School of Management as an Academic Board Member. He was an active member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers for 30 years, serving as Federal President and a Council member.
